Weekly Fishing Report: Rainbow Beach & Fraser Island 26 Sept 25
Welcome to this week’s fishing report, where we dive into the latest conditions, catches, and tips to help you make the most of your time on the water. Whether you're heading offshore, beach fishing, or exploring the creeks, we’ve got you covered.
Weather and Conditions
Last week brought mixed weather, with a few days of southerly winds and a slight temperature drop. Many anglers took advantage of the conditions to fish offshore and along the beaches. Looking ahead, this weekend will see northerly winds—swinging between northeast, northwest, and dead north. While not ideal for offshore fishing, the lack of swell means it’s still possible to get out there and enjoy a productive day.
Beach Fishing Highlights
The beaches have been buzzing with activity, and there’s plenty to target:
- Tailor: Reports of good catches, though numbers are higher on the island than the mainland.
- Whiting, Bream, Tarwhine, and Dart: These species are biting well, especially along Teewah Beach. With plenty of gutter formations, the key is to fish the last two hours of the run-out tide and the first of the run-in. Move frequently to locate the fish—gutter hopping is your best strategy.
Lagoon Action
The lagoon has been a hotspot for flathead, with anglers having success using soft plastics, hard bodies, and small baits. It’s a great spot for families, offering calm waters and a safe environment for kids to try their hand at fishing.
Inskip Point and Offshore Success
Inskip Point has been a standout location, producing an impressive number of Spanish and grey mackerel. Floating live baits has been the go-to method, and the results have been phenomenal. Offshore fishing last week also delivered big catches, including:
- Red Emperor
- Snapper
- Pearl Perch
- Amberjack
- Jewfish (which are currently abundant, thanks to the influx of tailor they feed on)
For offshore anglers, focus on the closer reefs near Rainbow Beach or the island, especially during the afternoon or evening bite.
The Straits: Mangrove Jack and Barramundi
The Straits are heating up with mangrove jack and barramundi action. These species are a thrill to target, and the secret lies in finding structure—think logs, rock bars, or drop-offs near feeder drains. Lures are particularly effective as the weather warms up, and we highly recommend trying the new Jack Burners available at Tackle World Rainbow Beach.
Whiting at Tin Can Bay
If you’re after a feed of whiting, Tin Can Bay is the place to be. The mouth of Schnapper Creek has been producing excellent catches. The secret? Fish quietly with super-light gear and fresh beach worms. It’s a great way to escape the northerly winds and enjoy a productive session.
Fraser Island Update
Fraser Island continues to deliver, with tailor still biting well. Don’t overlook the smaller surf species like whiting, bream, dart, and tarwhine, which are abundant from Dilli Village to Yidney Rocks. The lower end of the island is quieter and perfect for gutter hopping.
Spanish mackerel have also been a highlight, with many anglers ticking off their first mackerel catches. For those keen to try, consider using a drone to target these fish in the surf. The team at Tackle World Rainbow Beach can provide all the tips and gear you need.
Travel Tips
Beach conditions are stable, with good access along Teewah Beach and Rainbow Beach Rocks. However, Inskip Point is getting softer with the heat, so take your time, air down your tires, and travel during low tide for the best experience.
What to Target This Weekend
Given the forecasted northerly winds, offshore fishing might be challenging. Instead, focus on the creeks and feeder drains in the Straits. Look for structure like logs, rock bars, and small drains to find barramundi. If you need advice on gear, lures, or techniques, the team at Tackle World Rainbow Beach is ready to help.
Thanks for tuning in to this week’s fishing report! We hope these tips help you land your next big catch. See you next week for more updates and insights. Tight lines!
