Fresh Local Prawns

We've been working with local prawn trawlers around Rainbow Beach and the Fraser Coast for many years, giving us access to a great range of locally caught prawns. We generally stock Banana, King, Endeavour and Coral Prawns, with the variety and size available depending on what's currently being caught.

Fresh When They're Running

Our fresh prawn selection changes with the seasons and what's being caught locally. When fresh prawns come in, they're generally bought the same day they're caught and immediately Cryovac sealed in containers. We sell them fresh or fresh freeze them for later, so you can get the quality of a properly handled local prawn without relying on old bait that's been sitting around.

A Long Way From Servo Prawns

These are basically food-grade prawns, not the smelly old prawns that have been frozen and refrozen in the servo freezer. We take the same care with our bait prawns as we do with anything else we sell. At certain times of the year, particularly around Christmas, we even have food-grade prawns available for eating.

Gun Bait for Estuary & River Fishing

Prawns are one of the best all-round baits for our local estuaries and river systems. Smaller prawns, particularly Endeavour Prawns, are great for Whiting, Bream, Flathead, Garfish and other bread-and-butter species. You can also cut larger prawns into smaller pieces when you want a smaller bait.

Bigger Prawns for Bigger Fish

The bigger Banana and King Prawns are well worth fishing whole when you're targeting larger fish in our rivers and estuaries. They're a great bait for Jacks, Jewfish, Cod, Barra, Threadfin and Grunter, particularly when the fish are feeding on prawns and you want to match what's naturally on the menu.

Available Sizes

We have Local Prawns available in 200g, 500g and 1kg packs. We generally have the main local varieties available frozen, while fresh availability depends on the season and what's currently coming in from our local trawlers.

Fishing with Local Prawns (Fresh & Frozen)

Drew's Recommendations

When prawns are running, they are a gun bait around Rainbow Beach and the Fraser Coast because so many of our local fish feed on them. The trick is knowing what's running and where to use it, so definitely pop in and have a chat and I'll be happy to advise you what's running where and put you onto some fish.

Our smaller prawns, particularly the Endeavours, are great for Whiting, Bream and Flathead. The larger ones like Banana and King Prawns are well worth using whole for Jewfish, Jacks, Cod, Barra, Threadfin and Grunter in our rivers and estuaries. Around the inshore reefs, I'll also give a big whole Banana or King Prawn a go for Snapper, Sweetlip, Trevally and Coral Trout - but there are better baits for these, unless the prawns are really running in that particular area.

One of the things that makes our prawns different is that we're not just buying bait from whoever has a load available. We've been working with local prawn trawlers for many years, and these are people who are part of our local community and our extended fishing network. We know the boats, we know the people and we know what a good fresh prawn looks like.

Because of those relationships, we can get some of the best and freshest local prawns available and, importantly, we can usually tell you what's been running and what I'd be putting on the hook right now.
